Strategy: who actually makes a great island?
The best Tomodachi Life islands aren't filled with the most popular characters — they're filled with characters whose relationships would be fun to watch.
Before picking from the lists below, think about pairings, not just individuals. A Mii of your favorite anime hero is fine. A Mii of your favorite anime hero plus their canonical rival living next door with a pink-pondering bubble over their head is the kind of moment Tomodachi Life was built for.
Anime & manga
Anime characters work especially well in Living the Dream thanks to the new face paint system, which can finally handle exaggerated eyes, scars, and unique markings.
- Shōnen anchors: Spy-themed dads, ninja protagonists, hero-academy classes — strong personality contrast among the supporting cast
- Slice-of-life ensembles: Cafe shows, school clubs, sports teams — already balanced for Tomodachi-style relationship drama
- Studio Ghibli protagonists for a calm, slow-paced island theme
- Vocaloid-inspired Miis (Hatsune Miku-style hair has been a top Palette House export since launch)
Video games
Game character Miis have been some of the most viral creations on Reddit and Twitter post-launch. Players have built entire Pokémon starter lineups, Fire Emblem rosters, and Mario Kart grids.
- Nintendo's own roster — Mario, Link, Zelda, Samus, Inkling, Isabelle, Kirby. Nintendo characters lean on simple, iconic shapes that translate well to Mii.
- Pokémon trainers (and human-form Pokémon attempts via face paint)
- Indie favorites: Sans (the most-searched Tomodachi Mii of the last decade), Hollow Knight characters, Cuphead, Stardew villagers
- Fire Emblem: Three Houses casts — multiple players have rebuilt the entire Garreg Mach Monastery
- Final Fantasy party members — works particularly well for shared housing of up to 8 Miis
Movies & TV
- Sitcom casts — Friends, Brooklyn 99, Parks & Rec — already designed for ensemble drama
- Prestige TV ensembles — Breaking Bad's Walter and Jesse, Succession siblings, Stranger Things kids
- Animated movies — Pixar lineups, Dreamworks classics
- Classic film characters — work great with Living the Dream's expanded outfit options
Memes & internet characters
This is where the new face paint really shines, and where the removal of the language filter in Living the Dream pays off.
- Classic meme faces (the ones you're picturing right now)
- Streamer/YouTuber Miis — popular content creators tend to have very distinctive looks
- Original "shitposts" — fully custom Miis built around a single visual joke
- Cursed Miis intentionally — the new Mii Maker is so flexible that the worst-looking Miis often become a player's favorite chaos agents
Celebrities & musicians
Reminder: be respectful, especially in shareable creations. With that said, music groups and band lineups are popular because the existing fan dynamics translate perfectly to Tomodachi Life's relationship system.
- Band lineups (rock, K-pop, J-pop)
- Athletes from a single team
- Historical figures (Da Vinci, Cleopatra, etc.) for a "weird museum" island theme
Original ideas
The most rewarding islands are usually the ones built around an original concept rather than imported characters. Some prompts to try:
- "My ideal coffee shop" — invent a barista, regulars, and a rival cafe owner
- "Apartment building from a sitcom that doesn't exist" — design 8 roommates with conflicting personalities
- "Crew of a small spaceship" — captain, engineer, medic, the comic relief, the mysterious passenger
- "The neighborhood from your dreams" — literally just rebuild a place from your memory or imagination
- "Family tree across four generations" — Living the Dream's family tree feature makes this more rewarding than ever
Tips before you start creating
- Spread the personalities. Don't make 12 Confident Miis — they'll all want the spotlight. See all 16 personality types for balance.
- Vary the voices. Tomodachi's robotic voices have surprising range. Mismatched pitches make group scenes funnier.
- Save your build sheets. If you make something great, screenshot the Mii Maker steps. Sharing on Switch is harder than it used to be, so written guides are how the community trades great Miis.
- Don't fill the island all at once. Living the Dream's relationship system needs real-world time. 4–6 starter Miis is plenty for the first week.
