The four temperament axes
Both Tomodachi Life (3DS) and Living the Dream build personality from four sliders, each running between two opposites. Combine them and you get the 16 named types below.
- Movement: Quick ⟷ Slow
- Speech: Blunt ⟷ Polite
- Expression: Expressive ⟷ Reserved
- Attitude: Confident ⟷ Cautious
You set these when creating a Mii. In Living the Dream, the same axes return alongside a new "little quirk" system that adds individual flair on top of the base personality.
The 16 personality types
| Personality | Core traits | Relationship style |
|---|---|---|
| Easygoing | Relaxed, friendly, balanced | Plays well with almost everyone — good "starter" Mii |
| Confident | Bold, dramatic, big reactions | Loves the spotlight, clashes with shy types |
| Cool | Composed, understated, observant | Quietly steady; pairs well with expressive Miis |
| Energetic | Hyper, animated, fast-talking | Brings chaos; loves other expressive types |
| Quirky | Unpredictable, weird, fun | Makes the strangest friendships work |
| Tough | Direct, blunt, low-drama | Pairs surprisingly well with polite types |
| Bookworm | Thoughtful, calm, reserved | Slow-burn relationships, deep loyalties |
| Cautious | Careful, hesitant, planner | Needs reassurance; patient partners do well |
| Mellow | Sleepy, low-energy, kind | Easy companion; struggles with hyperactive types |
| Lively | Cheerful, sociable, bright | Friend collector — many casual relationships |
| Sassy | Sharp, witty, confident | Drama generator; loves bold personalities |
| Charming | Polished, polite, warm | Universal compatibility, especially in romance |
| Goofball | Silly, theatrical, joke-heavy | Pairs well with energetic and lively Miis |
| Independent | Self-sufficient, focused, quiet | Doesn't need many friends; loyal when it clicks |
| Free Spirit | Wandering, curious, expressive | Romantic and friendship potential everywhere |
| Strong-Silent | Reserved, intense, principled | Slow trust, deep bonds when earned |
How personality affects gameplay
- Daily ponderings: The thought bubble events Miis get (yellow for general, orange for friendship, pink for romance) are tinted by personality. A Cautious Mii agonizes over decisions; a Confident Mii barrels into them.
- Voice and speech: Personality shifts the cadence of the synthesized voice. Some words and catchphrases are personality-locked.
- Romance pacing: Charming and Free Spirit Miis tend to confess and progress relationships fastest. Bookworm, Cautious, and Strong-Silent Miis take much longer.
- Conflict triggers: Big personality mismatches (e.g. Tough + Cautious) can spark fights more often, but can also produce the funniest reconciliation events.
Compatibility tips
Easy pairings
If you want a peaceful island, lean on Charming, Easygoing, and Lively Miis. They pair well with almost everyone and rarely get into fights.
High-drama pairings
If you want comedy gold, mix Sassy + Confident, or Tough + Cautious. The fights and reconciliations these generate are some of the most-shared clips on social media post-launch.
Long-burn romances
Bookworm, Independent, and Strong-Silent couples take real-world weeks to develop. The payoff is some of the most "human-feeling" relationship arcs in the game.
What changed in Living the Dream
The 16 base personalities are essentially preserved from the 3DS original, but Living the Dream layers two new dimensions on top:
- Little quirks — a per-Mii flavor trait selected at creation, like "always hungry," "loves karaoke," or "can't stop dancing." Quirks influence which random events that Mii is eligible for.
- Romantic preferences — independent of personality, you set whether a Mii is attracted to men, women, non-binary Miis, multiple genders, or no one. This decouples personality from orientation in a way the 3DS game couldn't.
If you're starting a fresh island, take a few extra minutes during creation to think about quirks — they're the lever that keeps long-running islands from feeling samey.
